![]() The emergency winter shelter is supported by grants from New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, New Hampshire Community Development Authority, New Hampshire Bureau of Housing and Homeless, Strafford County, and the cities of Dover, Somersworth and Rochester.ĭover and Rochester are each paying $40,000 to help fund the operations, while Somersworth is paying $20,000, according to Andrews Parker. The Garrison Hotel, which declined comment for this story, previously allowed the state to use its building as an overflow emergency homeless shelter in the spring for the same COVID-19 reasons. It also established it because the churches that volunteered to serve as overnight warming centers last winter aren’t able to this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Tri-Cities and members of the Tri-City Mayors’ Task Force on Homelessness established the emergency shelter because traditional homeless shelters in the area have had to reduce their capacity due to COVID-19. The operation will provide beds for 152 straight days, far more than the overnight warming centers the cities and Strafford County operated the past three winters during periods of extreme cold weather and public risk. The shelter will use 20 rooms in one wing of the 200 Sterling Way hotel – 10 rooms with one king bed, and 10 rooms with two queen beds.
